DRAGONS FEAST ON 77'S


The Dragons buzz around 77's goalie Marco Repitsch. The Dragons won the game 9-3.

Rick Batenburg and Eric Langford had two goals each as the Powassan Dragons hammered the Oro Medonte 77's 9-2 at the Sportsplex on Sunday afternoon.

Stephan Devost, Will Laporte, Joe Zammit, Justin Huycke and Adam McParland had the other goals in the victory.

Bastian Eisank and Nick Davolio replied for the 77's.

Pat Cormack got the win in goal for the Dragons as he turned away 29 shots.

The Dragons next home game is Sunday, February 14th as they have a Valentine's Day date with the Muskoka Shield.

Game time is 3:30 p.m. at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Avalanche snuff out Dragons

Lucas Gjos had a natural hat trick in the third period as the Algoma Avalanche dumped the Dragons 9-4 in Powassan on Friday night.

Adam McParland, Cody Giroux, Justin Huycke and Mario Chaput scored for the Dragons.

DRAGONS VICTIMIZED IN SHOOTOUT

Tanner Burton scored the shootout winner as well as the game tying goal with less than 30 seconds left to propel the Algoma Avalanche to a 5-4 comeback victory over the Powassan Dragons on Sunday afternoon at the Sportsplex.

Justin Huycke led the Dragons with 2 goals and 1 assist as the Dragons built up a 4-1 lead in the second period.

Eric Langford finished with 1 goal and 1 assist. Jonah Coonishish scored the other Dragons goal while Rick Batenburg chipped in with 2 assists.

Tanner Burton was the one man show for the Avalanche finishing with 3 goals and 1 assist. Kaleb Chillman had 1 goal and 1 assist for the Avs.

BOBCATS POUNCE ON DRAGONS

The Powassan Dragons Martjin Oosterwijk stopped 55 shots but it wasn't enough as the Elliot Lake Bobcats skated out of the Sportsplex with a convincing 6-2 win Sunday afternoon.

Filip Kajba, Jake York, Roman Jurak, Matt Rogers, Kevin Filthaut and former Skyhawks/Trapppers forward Cory Marquardt did the damage offensively for the Bobcats.

Justin Huycke and Rich Batenburg scored for the Dragons in the loss.

DRAGONS MAKING MOVES

The Powassan Dragons will be looking to add to the win column in the last third of the season with the help of their recent roster shake-up.

The Dragons started the week with a game in Innisfil with two former North Bay Jr. Trappers in the lineup in Will Laporte and Mario Chaput and lost to the Lakers 10-4 on Monday night. Chaput chipped in with two helpers in his first game with the Dragons.

The Dragons were not finished tinkering with the roster by bringing in their 4th round pick of the 2009 GMHL entry draft Richard Bohan who flew in from Nevada late Thursday night. Bohan was playing for the Nevada Stars Midget 18AAA team of the North American Hockey Prospects League. The Dragons also announced the signing of Adam McParland of North Bay who was also on the Jr. Trappers roster. Adam is also the son of Nipissing University Lakers head coach Mike McParland.

With a crowded roster some moves had to be made wich saw their leading scorer Brandon Amireault and Capreol native Cody Mackinnon dealt to the King Wild for future considerations and local hockey product Dan Madigan to the Brock Bucks also for future considerations.

The GMHL signing deadline is January 10th and Dragons G.M. Denis Champagne believes they may have a few more moves before then.

"These moves are not always easy to make when dealing players from the top of your scoring chart but management had to make a decision on the direction of the team and this will be giving the younger Dragons and the newcomers an opportunity to lead and hopefully turn this season around going into the playoffs".

The Dragons will keep busy this weekend playing the Muskoka Shield in Gravenhurst on Friday and at home to the Toronto Moose at 3:30pm on Sunday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

DRAGONS GOALTENDER COMPETES IN IIHF TOURNAMENT

Martijn Oosterwijk of the Powassan Dragons represented his country the Netherlands last week in the IIHF World Under 20 Championship Div. II Group B. Oosterwijk started all 5 games and led his team to a second place finish with a 3.80 goals against average and a record of 4-1.

The Dragons lost both games this past weekend playing King Wild Saturday and losing 8-4 and back at home playing well but losing to the Muskoka Sheild 4-1.

Dragons are off until January 4th when they travel to Innisfil to take on the Lakers.

DRAGONS STORM AVALANCHE

Drew Moffat scored three times to lead the Powassan Dragons to a 6-5 overtime victory over the Algoma Avalanche at the Thessalon Community Centre on Thursday night.

Brandon Amireault and Michael Scally scored in regulation while Dan Madigan and Justin Huycke scored in the shootout.

Rene Valez led the Avalanche with 2 goals and 1 assist.

Powassan Goaltender Pat Cormack stopped both shooters in shootout for the win, while turning aside 60 Algoma shots in regulation.

The Dragons travel to Elliot Lake to play the Bobcats Friday and return home to host the King Wild on Sunday at 3:30 at the Powassan Sportsplex.

DRAGONS SHOOT DOWN BUCKS IN OT

Brandon Amirault scored the overtime winner as the Powassan Dragons snatched a win from the Brock Bucks 6-5 at the Sportsplex on Friday night.

Jonah Coonishish and Justin Huycke had 2 goals each for the Bucks, while DJ Champagne added a single in the win. Amirault also added 3 assists. He now has an impressive 17 goals and 23 points in 14 games.

Myles Mitchell, Matus Duris, Mark Zavorin, Stanislav Sherbakov and Denis Anafakin scored for the Bucks.

Dragons goalie Martijn Oosterwijk got the victory in goal turning away an impressive 58 shots. The Dragons host the Deseronto Storm next Friday night. The Storm are led by the league's leading scorer Brad Clark who has 52 points in only 16 games. Game time is 8pm at the Sportsplex.

DRAGONS GAME POSTPONED

The Powassan Dragons announce that the game agains the Algoma Avalanche that was to take place on Friday night will be postponed due to the H1N1 virus that has infected some players from the Algoma team. The game will be re-scheduled for another date. Meanwhile, the game that was postponed from last Sunday against the Elliot Lake Bobcats will take place on Saturday night in Powassan. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm at the Sportsplex.

DRAGONS STRIKE AGAINST MOOSE

The Powassan Dragons broke out of their 9 game losing streak with an impressive 8-4 victory over the Toronto Moose on Saturday night in Toronto.

Brandon Amirault led the Dragon attack with 4 goals, while Justin Huycke had 3 goals in the win. Stephane Devost chipped in with 3 assists. Jeff Heinzer also scored for the Dragons.

Jon Minard, Gord Whyte, Nicholas Del Plavignano and Michael Ivo replied for the Moose.

Newcomers

The Dragons had 3 new players in their lineup which were acquired from the Innisfill Lakers for future considerations.

The trade helps bolster the defence with the addition of Houston, Texas product Jeff Heinzer and Soco, Maine native Michael Scally.

Also part of the deal was 20-year-old forward Clay Wente from Reston, Virginia.

Cancellation

Dragons officials say due to transportation issues with the visiting team, the Dragons have cancelled the Sunday's game between the Elliot Lake Bobcats and the Powassan Dragons which was scheduled for 3:30 Sunday afternoon in Powassan. The next Dragons home game is next Friday as they once again host the Algoma Avalanche at the Sportsplex. Game time is 8pm.

AVALANCHE TRIM DRAGONS

The Algoma Avalanche, fresh off a 7-2 beating of the Deseronto Storm on Thursday night came into Powassan and walked away with a close 2-1 win on Friday night. Stephan Devost scored to give the Dragons a 1-0 first period lead before Mark Orazietti and Adam Delayer scored in the 2nd and 3rd periods respectively to give the Avalanche the victory.

Martin Oosterwijk was spectacular in the Dragons net stopping 45 of 47 shots on the night. Bradley Hewitt picked up the win for the Avs. The Dragons now travel to Toronto on Saturday night before returning home to host the league leading Elliot Lake Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at the Sportsplex.

DRAGONS GET BUCKED

Brock Malatches had 3 goals and 2 assists to lead the Brock Bucks to a 12-3 thrashing of the Powassan Dragons in GMHL action on Saturday.

Stanislav Sherbekov and Sultan Amirkhanov had two goals each for the Bucks.

Cody MacKinnon had a goal and an assist for the Dragons. Eric Langford and Dan Madigan had the other goals in the loss.

The loss drops the Dragons record to 1-7 on the season. The next Dragons home game is on Friday October 16th as they host the Algoma Avalanche. Game time is 8pm.

RATTLERS TAKE A BITE OUT OF THE DRAGONS

Powassan put out one of their best efforts of the season but came up short at the Sportsplex Friday night.

The Russian attack featuring KHL product Artem Podshendyalov was too much to handle for the Dragons as they were outscored 3-1 in the middle frame en route to a 7-4 Rattlers win.

The first period was a tight contest with the teams tied at 2-2 with Dragons forward Brandon Amireault with his first two of the hat trick and Stanislav Izvekov and Podshendyalov scoring for Bradford. Ivan Lyaskevich put the Rattlers ahead with a late goal in the last minute of play of the first.

The Rattlers went up 6-3 in the 2nd on goals by Matus Matis, Izvekov and Boris Stukalin while Zane Pitawanikwat replied for the Dragons.

The Dragons came out with a determined effort and cut the lead with a goal from Brandon Amireault to turn the trick but it was answered with Matis scoring his 2nd of the game to round up the scoring.

DRAGONS MAULED BY BOBCATS, BURIED BY AVALANCHE

The Elliot Lake Bobcats used 7 different scorers en route to a 7-3 win over the visiting Powassan Dragons at the Centennial arena on Friday night.

Jakub Rybinar, Greg Hyde, Patrick Smolen, Kenin Filthauts, Chad Burrows, Branislav Jankovic and Edward Sedivy scored for the Bobcats who outshot the visiting Dragons 58-19. Dan Madigan, Stephan Devost and Justin Huycke scored for the Dragons in the loss.

As they moved west on Saturday, the Dragons fell behind 4-0 in the first period eventually losing 8-4 to the Algoma Avalanche. Justin Huycke, Brandon Amirault, Jonah Coonishish and Stephan Devost scored for the Dragons. Jason Perron took the loss in goal as he faced 46 shots.

The Dragons next home game is this Friday, October 2nd as they host the Bradford Rattlers at the Sportsplex. Game time is 8pm.

DRAGONS CAN'T HOLD OFF BUCKS

The Brock Bucks came into the Sportsplex very hungry for their first win of the season going 0-3 to start their campaign. They took very little time to start when Alex Vasilenchenko and Myles Mitchell scores back to back early in the first to put the Dragons on their heels to start the game. The game went back and forth for a few more minutes with the Dragons peppering goaltender Cayden Edwards but could not beat him and the Mark Zaforin scored to make it 3-0. Dragons capitain Justin Huycke found the net before the end of the period to close the gap going into the second period.

In the second period, the Dragons came out with determination and grit but could not score in the middle period and brock countered with two goals from Stanislav Shcherbakov and Zaforin to end the period 5-1.

The Russian imports carried the play for most part of the third period with their strong puck possesion game. Cody Mackinnon scored on the power play for the Dragons and the Bucks replied with 2 unanswered goals from Shcherbakov and Mitchell to round up the scoring.

Next game for the Dragons is this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Sportsplex when they host the Elliot Lake Bobcats.

DRAGONS TAKE SEASON OPENER

Brandon Amirault scored 3 times to lead the Powassan Dragons to their first in in their new lair 6-3 over the Minden Riverkings on Friday night.

Dan Madigan, Cody Mackinnon and Zane Pitawanikwat scored the other goals for the Dragons in front of a crowd of close to 250 at the Powassan Sportsplex. Justin Huycke and Stefan Devost each picked up 2 assists.

Martijn Oosterwijk got the win in goal for the Dragons stopping 17 shots in the victory. Next up for the Dragons is a home date with the Brock Bucks next Friday at the Sportsplex. Game time is 8pm.
