DRAGONS WILL HAVE POLISH FLAVOUR

The Powassan Dragons of the Greater Metro Jr. ‘A’ Hockey League will ice a heavy arsenal of Polish players this coming season, according to owner and head coach Lui Ricci.

He was in Poland recently for the World Under-18 Hockey Championships and held a training camp for players willing to make the move to Canada.

Ricci says he chose to scout Polish players because he’s come to an agreement with the owner of the DLB Academy in Powassan – who happens to be Polish – where he’ll go to Poland to recruit players to come to Powassan to stay at the Academy while they play for the Dragons, and learn English at the same time.

“That’s very, very important to a country like Poland,” Ricci said. “Because a lot of the boys don’t speak the language (English)…and of course that’s the number one language around the world.”

A many as 15 polish hockey players could potentially make the move to Powassan to play for the Dragons next fall, and to ease the language barrier, Ricci is in talks to bring over a coach from Poland - who speaks English - to be an assistant coach of the Dragons, and perhaps take over as head coaching duties one day.

“It’ll be great, because then he can come in the daytime and do the off-ice (training) with them,” Ricci said.

The Dragons won’t be the only European-heavy team this coming season, as there will be a team made up entirely of Russians called the “Russia Red Wings”.

“The league (GMHL) seems to be getting stronger and stronger every year because you’re talking about players coming from all over the world,” added Ricci.

Last season the Dragons lone European import was goaltender Martjin Oosterwijk who is from the Netherlands.

DRAGONS FALL IN ONE GAME PLAYOFF

The Powassan Dragons were cooled off 6-2 by the Algoma Avalanche in a one-game playoff, with the winner moving on to the Greater Metro Jr. A Hockey League quarter-finals.

Justin Huycke and Will Laporte scored in Sunday's loss.

Rene Balazs, Mike Brunnetta, Luke Gjos, Thomas Stewart, Bo Boissonneault, and Mark Orazietti tickled the twine for the Avalanche.

Dragons Dutch goalkeeper Martjin Oosterwijk faced 57 in the loss.

The Dragons opted for a youth movement in their first season in Powassan, with former Widdifeld Wildcats forward and team captain Justin Huycke is the only player not eligible to return to the squad next season.
