DRAGONS MAKING MOVES

The Powassan Dragons will be looking to add to the win column in the last third of the season with the help of their recent roster shake-up.

The Dragons started the week with a game in Innisfil with two former North Bay Jr. Trappers in the lineup in Will Laporte and Mario Chaput and lost to the Lakers 10-4 on Monday night. Chaput chipped in with two helpers in his first game with the Dragons.

The Dragons were not finished tinkering with the roster by bringing in their 4th round pick of the 2009 GMHL entry draft Richard Bohan who flew in from Nevada late Thursday night. Bohan was playing for the Nevada Stars Midget 18AAA team of the North American Hockey Prospects League. The Dragons also announced the signing of Adam McParland of North Bay who was also on the Jr. Trappers roster. Adam is also the son of Nipissing University Lakers head coach Mike McParland.

With a crowded roster some moves had to be made wich saw their leading scorer Brandon Amireault and Capreol native Cody Mackinnon dealt to the King Wild for future considerations and local hockey product Dan Madigan to the Brock Bucks also for future considerations.

The GMHL signing deadline is January 10th and Dragons G.M. Denis Champagne believes they may have a few more moves before then.

"These moves are not always easy to make when dealing players from the top of your scoring chart but management had to make a decision on the direction of the team and this will be giving the younger Dragons and the newcomers an opportunity to lead and hopefully turn this season around going into the playoffs".

The Dragons will keep busy this weekend playing the Muskoka Shield in Gravenhurst on Friday and at home to the Toronto Moose at 3:30pm on Sunday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

DRAGONS DROP OT CONTEST TO DEFENDING GMHL CHAMPS

The Powassan Dragons proved they will be a force to be reckoned with as they played their first exhibition game Saturday afternoon giving the defending GMHL champions South Muskoka Shield all they could handle losing 5-4 in overtime at the Gravenhurst Centennial Arena.

The Dragons came out surprising the Shield with physical play and some strong skating but the veteran Shield lineup consisting of 12 returning players made the Dragons pay on the power play to start the scoring when last season's leading goal scorer Dylan Sontag scored to put the home team up 1-0. The Shield scored again on a goal by Ricky Greenslade less than a minute later to make it 2-0 going into the 2nd. The Dragons who dressed 7 players with GMHL experience fought back with a goal by Powassan product Matt Jeanneault on the power play only to have the Shield respond with a goal from Adam Macbeth. Tthe young Dragons kept fighting playing tough hockey in their end with good goaltending by Martijn Oosterwijk who kept the Shield off the scoreboard. The Dragons offence responded with goals by Joe Turner and DJ Champagne to tie the game 3-3.

The Shield once again showing why they won the Russell Cup last season when Tim Wender scored on goaltender Pat Cormack who shared goaltending duties with Oosterwijk. A hard fought third period with Cormack shutting the door proved important as overager Brandon Amirault scored to tie the game with a little over 4 minutes left in the third to foce overtime. Both clubs had chances early into the overtime period but speedy Shield forward Rob Childs took advantage of a defensive miscue at his blue line skated in to beat Cormack for the victory. Amirault and Turner each had a goal and an assist while Jonah Coonishish had 2 assists.

The Dragons will continue to  have tryouts from September 1st to the 3rd from 9:30-11:00pm at the Powassan Sportsplex. All interested players are to contact GM Denis Champagne at 752-1148. DRAGONS TAKING SHAPE

The ice plant is fired up at the Powassan Sportsplex and exciting hockey is around the corner.

The Dragons coaching staff and management are hard at work scouting talent for the Powassan Dragons and finalizing plans for the upcoming season and most notably the home opener September 11th at 8pm as they host the Minden River Kings at the Sportsplex. The next night, the Dragons will make their first road trip across the border to Ville Marie, Québec to do battle with the Voyageurs. This will be the begining of the Dragons 44 regular season games for the 2009-2010 season.

The Dragons are also excited to conduct their main camp August 24th to the 28th from 7-8:30 pm nightly at the Sportsplex. Dragons officials say the camp should feature some of the top players from the area and import players from Europe and the U.S. looking to play in the Greater Metro Junior Hockey League.

Dragons manager Denis Champagne is enthusiastic about this upcoming season and thinks that Powassan will make a impact in the league from the drop of the puck opening night. "We have recruited and made some trades in the off-season to acquire some veteran players who have played in the GMHL or other junior leagues to guarantee leadership on and off the ice to start the season," said Champagne.

"The players will be ready to play opening night and hopefully we will rival any team in our league with fan support and energize the sportsplex with great hockey and great fans. Their is nothing like a full house of hockey fans energizing their home team and cheering them to victory! I have seen it first hand when a community has embraced their GMHL TEAM and the team has embraced the community. It sure makes for a interesting winter and it becomes the envy of other players, coaches and communities."

Early bird pricing on season tickets are still in effect to guarantee maximum attendance and to allow everyone the time to purchase and take advantage of the pricing for every Powassan Dragons home game.

HOCKEY CANADA EASES UP ON OUTLAW LEAGUES

Until recently, young hockey players who participated in outlaw leagues, or leagues not sanctioned by Hockey Canada, were penalized from playing in a sanctioned leagues for up to two subsequent seasons. Local Members of Parliament and others found this rule unfair and complaints were sent to the Competition Bureau. The Competition Bureau received complaints about Hockey Canada sanctioning against so-called outlaw hockey leagues, and the players and arenas in which they play. The Bureau examined the bulletin and concluded that some aspects of the sanctions gave rise to issues under section 79 of the Competition Act, otherwise known as the abuse of dominance provision.

As a result of the dialogue initiated by the Bureau, Hockey Canada has eliminated three major sanctions:

1) Municipalities and arenas may now offer ice time to non-affiliated leagues without the fear of losing the business of Hockey Canada-sanctioned activities.

2) The suspension period for a player that participates in an outlaw league can no longer extend beyond the season in which that participation takes place.

3) The third sanction was changed to make it clear that a Hockey Canada team would not be in violation of the bulletin merely by playing in the same arena as an outlaw league.

"This is a huge win for the GMHL and the Dragons. No longer can Hockey Canada impose scare tactics to local arenas and dictate who can rent the ice in different municipalities," said Dragons president and head coach Lui Ricci. "It just gives players another place to play without the fear of facing severe penalties for playing in our league".

GMHL WELCOMES THE POWASSAN DRAGONS!

Courtesy of gmhl.net

POWASSAN, ON - The Greater Metro Junior"A" Hockey League has announced today that the league has accepted the Powassan Dragons proposal to be apart of the 2009-2010 Season.

The Dragons who were in Ville-Marie last season has moved to Powassan after a disappointing turn of events that had them suspend operations mid way through the season. The Dragons has established their grounds in Powassan for the 2009-10 season, spearheaded by Lui Ricci (Team Owner), and with great support from the good people of Powassan.

The team colors will be the same as last years Ville-Marie Dragons.

DRAGONS ARE COMING TO POWASSAN

Courtesy of baytoday.ca

The Dragons are changing lairs and will be finally bringing a GMHL team to the Powassan area this fall.

The GMHL franchise, owned by North Bay businessman Lui Ricci had to close up shop mid season in Ville-Marie, Québec due to – what he felt – was a lack of support in the area. However, Ville Marie is getting a new GMHL franchise this fall called; “the Voyageurs.”

Ricci along with Denis Champagne will be running the Dragons franchise. The two worked together as coach and general manager respectively last season with the Nipissing Alouettes.

“We’ve transferred the franchise to Powassan as we suspended operations on the business side (in Ville-Marie). It was tough as I couldn’t be there every day in Ville-Marie and I had already committed to coaching in Nipissing.” Ricci says he got the “go-ahead” from the non-sanctioned Greater Metro Junior Hockey League three months ago to find another destination for the franchise which joins Espanola, Elliot Lake, and Nipissing as GMHL franchises in Northern Ontario.

The move comes as good news for the Powassan area, which was initially targeted as a location for a GMHL franchise this fall with different ownership and with the nickname "Blazers." A local group spearheaded by area hockey coach Doug Sanders struck an arena deal with the town in 2008, but they were unable to come up with the funds to purchase the GMHL franchise rights which were eventually taken over by Ricci.

“We love the stuff we are hearing from the community,” Ricci said adding that the local councilors have already promised to purchase season ticket packages. “We are hoping to get support from Trout Creek, Sundridge, South River as well, let alone some business support from North Bay.”

Dragons Roster

Ricci will bring a handful of players with him from his 08-09 Dragons team, but he says he’s going to work hard this summer to bring enough quality players to stock his 25-man roster with players aged 15-20. “We are going to prospect camps in the U.S. to attract players here,” he said. The players themselves will be staying in the new DLB academy of Sport and Recreation based in Powassan. “It’s a boot camp for campers, soccer players and any of our players will be lodging at this academy,” said Ricci. “It includes a gym and a fitness centre and we are hoping to have dorms built similar to the ones at the World Hockey Centre in Shelburne, Ontario.”

Ricci also has added former North Bay Centennial Dean Harvey as an assistant coach. Ricci expects the Dragons will hold a summer camp in North Bay or Burks Falls in July.
